Do It (Again) this Masturbation May!
Masturbation May is here once again, and we have something special planned this year too. With the success of last year's #doitinmay challenge, we’re hoping to continue that wave of positivity and self-love with a new message! First though, let’s have a recap of what Masturbation May is, what we achieved, and how you can support our campaign in 2022!
This year, we will keep up our big (and safe!) celebrations with fans, that we started last year!
In 2021 we had to plan ways to get people involved in a grand and safe way, so we decided on a big promotion based around social media. It’s safe to say that we managed to succeed in our goals! But it wouldn’t have been possible without our #doitinmay challenge and the astounding support of our fans!
We’ll cover what we mean in a moment, but first, a quick reminder of the continued importance of Masturbation May.
Masturbation May Recap
Did you know this month-long celebration originally began as a day? The first-ever National Masturbation Day was celebrated on May 7th, 1995. Sex-positive retailer Good Vibrations announced the day in response to the firing of the then Surgeon General of the United States Jocelyn Elders in 1994.
Unfortunately, she was ‘forced to resign’ over a comment stating “I think that it [masturbation] is part of human sexuality, and perhaps it should be taught” and her thoughts on masturbation at the time. While teaching around masturbation may have improved a little (possibly in no small part due to the internet making researching for yourself more possible), the stigma surrounding masturbation continues. Something we’re still working tirelessly to change.
Masturbation May 2021
Last year was an ambitious one for sure. We went all out, with recruiting challengers and offering several milestones to unlock, including 10% off EVERYTHING for all our Stores, 20% off HOLE LOTIONs, and free delivery amongst other stretch goals. How? Through your participation and engagement with the hashtag #doitinmay. Our fans were amazing and didn’t disappoint.
We couldn’t have been more blown away with the results of reaching out to our followers and fans to help challenge the taboo surrounding self-pleasure. We counted up the #doitinmay hashtags throughout May 2021 to unlock rewards, but we also counted our fans' efforts in cheering our Challengers. The results?

We couldn’t have been happier! Not to mention the positive messages our fans shared during that time to help encourage others about the benefits of sexual wellness and self-love.
Do It In May 2022 Challenge
Our challenge might not be so ambitious this year, but the message is still the same. To help break the stigma of self-love and encourage people to have a more positive outlook on taking care of their sexual wellness. The challenge we’ve presented to our fans this time is a little different, however.
This year we want our fans and other participants to show us another side of themselves. To show that while we all have the passion for promoting self-love in common, we have so many other things in common that we’re probably unaware of. Hobbies, interests, and likes that are currently more socially acceptable… so why not mix those two sides together to show they are both normal parts of life.
Taking part is simple — just take a photo of your favorite TENGA or iroha product with something else that is important to you. It could be a favorite hobby, an important place… anything that means something to you. All we ask for this year's Masturbation May is for everyone to show something else that expresses another side of themselves.
