March Madness and Masturbation
The 2024 NFL Super Bowl LVIII (58) was arguably one of the more exciting football games in recent history, with the Kansas City Chiefs winning over the San Francisco 49ers in a close overtime game. 123.4 million viewers tuned in, or logged in, to watch the game.
While it may be true that some watched the Super Bowl to catch a glimpse of Taylor Swift cheering for her boyfriend, Travis Kelce of the K.C. Chiefs, the majority of sports fans witnessed the most viewed Super Bowl game in NFL history. In fact, this was the second largest viewing audience in American TV history, the first being the historic 1969 Apollo 11 Moon landing, which had anywhere from 125 to 150 million American viewers watching astronaut Neil Armstrong walk on the Moon.
While that’s all interesting, at this point, you may be asking, ‘Why is all of this being mentioned on a sex toy blog? Is there any relation between masturbation and sports, or are we just making stuff up?’
Actually, the correlation may be stronger than you think.
What Does Sports Have to Do with Masturbation?
The millions of people who were watching the Super Bowl were not engaging in another activity: watching porn. Pornhub reported a significant drop in viewership, with a 25% decrease in its average audience in the United States overall. The decline in Pornhub viewership was even more significant in Kansas City and San Francisco, the cities of the two teams playing in the Super Bowl.
As we have reported in TENGA’s 2017 Masturbation Behavior and Perceptions Study, half of the 1,200 respondents surveyed reported having a regular masturbation routine. Among those who do, the majority of men (73%) and nearly half of the women (44%) surveyed said they viewed adult content while masturbating.
Correct us if we are wrong, but it does seem reasonable to assume that a significant number of individuals incorporate pornography into their masturbation routines. And perhaps some of them took a little break from self-pleasure to partake in another kind of leisure activity on Super Bowl Sunday (although it’s never a bad idea to have a TENGA masturbator handy for any stressful situations, like when your team is losing).
So the correlation between major U.S. sporting events on TV and a temporary decline in masturbation may seem like a bit of a stretch, but the numbers may suggest otherwise.
Incidentally, it seems like the good people of San Francisco, after their loss, may have decided to go to bed early and dream of next year’s football season, as Pornhub views only slightly rose after the game (maybe a few people trying to recover from a bitter loss and relieve some anxiety), while the folks in Kansas City did a little more “celebrating” as seen in the 17% higher than average rise in Pornhub viewing after the game.

In the United States, the tournament of 68 university basketball teams will be gearing up for the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Championship in March (aka March Madness). As this is a major sporting event, it will be interesting to see which teams move up the brackets in the tournament and how other “activities”, like watching pornography, either drop or increase depending on people’s favorite team’s results!
